Film / TV Credits

In 2023 Michael will film This Town, a new BBC 1 drama from Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, and he will appear in another BBC 1 drama, Blue Lights, by Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson.

Michael has leading roles in two RTÉ children’s comedy series Blasts from The Past and Bernard Dunne’s Mythical Heroes. He also has a featured role as an MI5 agent in Dutch series The Spectacular. He appeared very briefly in My Left Nut - the series he adapted from his theatre show. He could not play the main character as apparently at 30, he was too old to play a 15 year old.

He has also appeared in Game of Thrones, Krypton, Soft Border Patrol, The Keeper, Bravery Under Fire as well as numerous short films. See IMDB profile below.

Motor Neurone Disease Diagnosis

In February 2023 Michael was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, he released the below statement on his social media.

Well. I have some bad news to share.

On 1st February I was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. (https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/motor-neurone-disease/)

At the minute it's only presenting in my legs. It started in my right leg last October, you may have seen me dandering about with a limp and brace on my right leg. At the moment my upper body is completely unaffected.

It feels a bit strange making an announcement like this on social media, but I'm doing it for a two reasons.

One - to stop the awkward dance when I meet people where I don't know if they've heard the news or not. It's quite emotionally draining. Hopefully most people will know after this.

Two - to try and raise awareness of the disease. I’m hopefully going to be starting on an experimental drug trial soon. The MND Association charity helps fund a lot of research into these experimental drug trials. So if you fancy donating to them, there's a link at the bottom of this.

But aye - it's clearly absolutely shite, however still plenty to be positive about. I'm marrying the love of my life in September. We just went to Italy and ate our body weight in pasta and cured meats. I'm still writing. I'm still acting. Bitter Pill, a five part radio series I co-wrote started airing on BBC Radio 4 this afternoon. I'll be performing Lie Low in The Abbey Theatre for the last two weeks of July, and in The Traverse Theatre at The Edinburgh Fringe the first two weeks of August.

On that note - my limp is really authentic right now, so if anyone is casting any of the following roles, hit me up:

Richard III
Manus in Translations
Portia Coughlan's Husband
The Cripple in The Cripple of Inishman
Tiny Tim

To those who know already and have supported me and my family through the first few months - thank you. If anyone reaches out, I will 100% read all your messages, and they will be read with great care and love. But just know I might not reply. I'm trying to put a pretty positive spin on all this, but it's still really really grim. And it takes a lot of energy to talk about it - so just a wee heads up there.

Otherwise, hope you're all well. Eat nice food. Drink nice things. Hang out with the people you love. What else is there?

PS: Absolutely not joking about my authentic limp. Someone cast me as Richard III.
